School Boards
Board of Education
A county Board of Education is the policy-making body of the
district. A Board of Education’s powers and duties are set by state
law. The Board is responsible for educational planning and
evaluation, staffing and appraisal, school facilities, financial
resources and communication. Also, it has the authority to
purchase land, decide on a site and oversee school facilities
construction.
The Colorado Association of School Boards (CASB), Colorado
Association of School Executives (CASE) and the Jefferson
County School Board all testified in opposition of HB1293.
Currently all three organizations are working with Representative
Green, Bob Yuhnke and Environment Colorado to find mutually
agreeable wording for HB 1293.
As of April 5th, 2007, the Jefferson County School Board is
opposing HB 1293, no official reasons have been provided
to parents
Mothers for Clean Air Colorado believes the Board of Education is
not going far enough to protect children’s health based on
scientific studies. CASB, CASE and Jefferson County School
Board want authority to:
- Build a school near a known hazard, when no alternative
exists.
- Not hold a “special” public hearing, when it’s determined
that a school will be located next to a known hazard.
What can parents do?
